ARTIST TRIPLEX
New York, NY
2016
1,414 square feet
This is the home of a woman artist who is also the mother of two young daughters. SAS combined three small apartments on three different levels for the three female occupants. The Artist-Mother is in the middle, with one daughter, the younger, the older, and the older, each with its own door to the outside world. The design was conceived to offer a flexible artistic environment for each of them. Nestled in the heart of Greenwich Village, this artist’s triplex is flushed with natural light and unique charm, featuring brownstone lintels, marble fireplaces, custom furniture, and millwork. Each floor provides privacy with its bedroom and bathroom. The parlor floor houses the artist’s studio in the back with northeast-facing windows, where this artist paints using the morning light. This floor also includes a spacious living room, an L-shaped kitchen, and a versatile room, the Artist-Mother bedroom. SAS worked with the three clients to accommodate their books, paintings, clothing, and life in a way that merged with the existing elements of each space yet felt unified and together.
