GELES CABRERA: MUSEO ECULTORICO

Americas Society, New York

June 8 through July 30, 2022

Geles Cabrera: Museo Escultorico, retraces the artist’s work, across a lifetime of material and formal experimentation. Born in 1926, Cabrera is one of the first and most influential female sculptors in Mexico. With a background in painting, drawing, and avant-garde dance, Cabrera’s work explores the human body, sexuality, movement, and abstraction through different mediums – volcanic rock, bronze, papier-mâché, and wood. The exhibition design, by SAS, honors and draws upon Cabrera’s original displays. Interspersed with plants, the sculptures lay upon no-mortar, brick bases, or pedestals made with plumbing pipes and painted wood tops, the exhibit design relies on the dignity of construction materials and the ambiance of an exterior courtyard.
