MALDEN ESTATE
Saugerties, New York
2020
3,600 square feet
The Malden Estate was built in 1833 to suit the needs of the Bigelow family. In 1865, John Bigelow was appointed US Ambassador to France by Abraham Lincoln. Upon his return to Malden, Bigelow added new structures to the house and farm.
In 2019, Malden Estate was acquired by a young couple. The couple tasked SAS with the renovation of the house and grounds. One of the owner’s requests was to create a beautiful vegetable garden. SAS located the vegetable garden to the north of the house to relate to the new kitchen. While new mechanical upgrades were done throughout the house to incorporate a new chef kitchen, pantry, bar, and bathrooms, many original materials, and surfaces such as the joists in the ceilings were restored and exposed to honor the historic value of the home.
For the interiors, SAS worked with the owners and Kelsey Falter to bring softness through contemporary textures and color. Heitmann Brothers were the contractors in charge.
New steel windows and doors open the house to the West and North. The exterior façade is rendered with a naturally pigmented lime wash pink.
